Joel C. Gordon served as a Director of HealthSouth for close to a decade, providing critical leadership for the company as interim chairman from 2003-04. He is the former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc., the second largest operator of outpatient surgery centers in the United States, which HealthSouth purchased in 1996. He founded the General Care Corporation in 1969 and served as president and vice chairman of the board until the company was purchased in 1980 by Hospital Corporation of America, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services. He also founded HealthWise of America, an HMO which became part of United Healthcare. Mr. Gordon is principal of The Gordon Group, a private investment firm, and has served on numerous non-profit boards, including the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
