Congratulations to Sarah (Burns) John, Ph.D. ’13 [Economics] for recently receiving the 2022 Larry D. Welch Award for Best External Publication for “Deterring Illegal Entry: Migrant Sanctions and Recidivism in Border Apprehensions.” The article was published in American Economic Journal in August 2021. Sarah is an assistant director in the Cost Analysis and Research Division (CARD) at one of the three federally funded research and development centers operated by Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). Her research is crucial to our nation in fully understanding the implications of sanctions at our borders. 

James Ziliak, Department Chair of Economics said, "Sarah has leveraged her rigorous training at UK to conduct economic research on issues of vital importance to public policy and our national security. This research award is wonderful recognition for her many accomplishments since joining IDA."
