Last week, University of Kentucky and Gatton College of Business and Economics students Michael Zhu, Will Smith and Frank Zhang traveled to the University of Georgia to compete in the South East Annual Stock Competition hosted by the Terry School of Business. Their stock pitch, a value-based investment in Dollar Tree, was selected from a pool of approximately 50 submissions to participate in the semi-finals in Athens.
The 2019 Pelissier Scholars Wall Street Experience application is open now through November 23. A maximum of twelve participants will be selected. Applications are open to all undergraduate students of all majors. Each participant will receive a scholarship of $2,000-$2,400. Apply here.

Congratulations to Michael Graehler, Ben Long, Mortez Momeni, Will Smith, Yelipaer Tuergan, Wenzhu Yong, Frank Zhang, and Michael Zhu. These students have
been selected to receive CFA Exam Scholarships to cover the costs associated with taking the CFA exams. Passing the exams is the first step towards obtaining the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, the top globally respected and recognized investment credential.
Kristine Hankins’ article, “Understanding the Rise in Corporate Cash: Precautionary Savings or Foreign Taxes” (co-authored with Mike Faulkender and Mitchell Petersen), has been accepted for publication in the Review of Financial Studies.
Mark Liu, Associate Professor of Finance, has presented the paper “Corporate Risk-Taking in Dual-Class Firms” (coauthored with Brad Jordan and Soohyung Kim) at University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Business School on May 8, 2018.
Gatton’s new MS Finance program is pleased to report that all 22 students who planned to finish the program in one year successfully graduated on May 4th. The program celebrated this marked achievement by hosting an inaugural graduating class banquet for the students and their loved ones in Woodward, coordinated by Michelle Lowe and team. Smiles of accomplishment and pride were present all around the room as Director Dr. Mark Liu expressed, “One year ago, there was no University of Kentucky MS Finance program.
With the generous support of PNC Bank and John Gohmann, the department hosted the 3rd annual PNC - Kentucky Finance Conference on April 26-28.
The conference received more than 300 submissions from 20 different countries and 35 different states. With only 12 papers being included on the final program, the acceptance rate of less than 4% places the conference in a similar class as the most exclusive finance journals in the world. In addition to our keynote speaker, Laura Starks from UT Austin, conference attendees included faculty from Wharton, UCLA, MIT, Yale, and Columbia.

The Gatton College of Business and Economics is proud to announce the results from the first University of Kentucky stock pitch competition. Funding partners, the Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise and Truist, the competition was open to all students enrolled full-time in undergraduate or master’s-level programs at the University of Kentucky. The faculty advisors of the Finance Society, the Economics Society, and the Wildcat Investment Club (Wendy Liu, Darshak Patel, and Will Gerken) jointly organized the competition.
