The Gatton College of Business and Economics Research Excellence Committee is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the third annual Research Excellence Initiative Awards. These awards are part of the College’s broader strategic mandate on the Research Excellence Initiative, which is to influence the thinking of business leaders, policy-makers and scholars around the world by providing insight and analysis of key topics critical to the business, policy, and research communities.

As outlined below, there are five award categories:

  • Junior Faculty Research Award ($2,500): This award recognizes a non-tenured faculty member for early career achievements. This can be interpreted broadly by the committee to include a range of criteria from any of the previous awards, from high quality publications, research that creates impact upon publication, innovative research, or research that creates particular impact within the graduate student population. This award cannot be made to a recipient of an award from any other category in a given year, and may only be awarded to the same faculty member once prior to the tenure decision.
  • Research Productivity Award ($2,500): This award recognizes a faculty member that has been particularly prolific over the previous four-year period. Criteria for the award can include (but is not limited to) the following: frequency of premier journal publications, high quality books/monographs, or volume of research output. The same faculty member may be recognized with this award no more than once every four years.
  • Academic Impact Research Award ($2,500): This award recognizes a faculty member whose body of published work has been particularly impactful over the previous five-year period, and who has demonstrated a record of continued research productivity excellence during that period. Criteria to establish impact can include (but is not limited to) number of citations (e.g., Google Scholar, Web of Science), relative impact of citations (e.g., how many citations are in premier journals, as measured by ISI Impact). Criteria to establish continued productivity are similar to those in the productivity award. The same faculty member may be recognized with this award no more than once every six years.
  • Managerial Impact Research Award ($2,500): This award recognizes a faculty member for peer-reviewed research that has had a significant impact on managerial practice in a given discipline. Criteria include but are not limited to media coverage, Altmetrics, presentation to industry audiences/outlets, and documented application of insight by practitioners. The same faculty member may be recognized with this award no more than once every four years.
  • Societal Impact Research Award ($2,500): This award recognizes a faculty member for peer-reviewed research that has had a significant impact on society. Criteria include but are not limited to media coverage, Altmetrics, documented application of insight by policymakers, on the environment or societal welfare. The same faculty member may be recognized with this award no more than once every four years.

Nominations should be no more than one page in length highlighting key criteria as outlined in the award categories above, and any other relevant supporting evidence, and should also include a current CV. Self-nominations are not permitted. Members of the Research Excellence Committee are ineligible for these awards and are also ineligible to nominate candidates. One person may be nominated for more than one award, but each award nomination must be submitted separately. The committee may use discretion in making the awards, including choosing to not make awards in a given category and/or making multiple awards within a single category.

All submissions are due by February 5, 2024. Awards will be announced at the Gatton Faculty Awards (Date TBD).
