To ensure an optimal learning experience in Gatton College of Business and Economics courses, we recommend using a Windows-based device. MacBooks, while popular, have limited compatibility with certain required software, which may hinder academic performance.
Please note: MacBooks with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, or newer processors will face compatibility issues with required software. Many applications, such as Power BI, UCINET, Alteryx, and SPSS Amos, either lack full macOS support or require emulation software like Parallels (a paid subscription) to run. Performance can also be slower when using Virtual Den or accessing software that requires a Windows OS, particularly for intensive tasks. Additionally, students who choose MacBooks may need to budget for Parallels or similar emulation software and should be prepared for the possibility of performance trade-offs when using Windows-based applications. MacBooks are not recommended for use at the Business College.
If you choose an Apple device, you’ll likely encounter software that doesn’t run on macOS and requires Windows. In these cases, familiarity with Windows emulation software, like Parallels, is necessary to run the required programs on your Mac. Note that the performance may be slower than on a native Windows machine, especially for applications used in data-intensive or analytics courses.
A second monitor is recommended for software-based learning and group projects. Use the main screen for software work and the second screen for following shared screens or team discussions.
Windows-based devices are generally the most compatible and cost-effective option for most students. They support all required software and are easier to troubleshoot. While Apple devices work for many students, they can introduce complications with specialized software or troubleshooting needs. Chromebooks and tablets (iPads, Android devices, Windows RT, etc.) are not recommended as they lack the necessary functionality for coursework.
