Carol Steltenkamp

Carol Steltenkamp, professor of pediatrics and Professional MBA alum at the University of Kentucky, has been appointed to External Chief Medical Officer at UK HealthCare. In this new role, Dr. Steltenkamp will represent the voices of clinicians in strategy, outreach and communications. Working on behalf of the Office of the UK Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Dr. Steltenkamp is responsible for developing and maintaining strategic clinical alliances with physicians and health care organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.

Dr. Steltenkamp graduated from what is now known as the Professional MBA program at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics. The Professional MBA is a part-time program designed for full-time working professionals across all industries and academic backgrounds in Kentucky and beyond.

Regarding her experiences in the program and how it’s helped shape her career, Dr. Steltenkamp says, "Earning my MBA has helped me to bridge the gap between clinical medicine and the business of medicine. The principles I learned have provided a strong base in all facets of my career."

Since 1996, Dr. Steltenkamp has been a member of the pediatric faculty at the UK College of Medicine. From 2004 to 2018, she served as UK HealthCare’s first chief medical information officer. She received her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed a residency at UK. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. In 2015, she became chair of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Board of Managers, overseeing a global, cause-based, not-for-profit organization focused on better health through information technology (IT). In 2016 and 2017, she was named one of the Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT.

Dr. Steltenkamp has chaired the Kentucky eHealth Board, which successfully launched and maintains the Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE). She is also the principal investigator for more than $10 million in health care information technology (HIT) grant funding, including the foundational grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services establishing the Kentucky Regional Extension Center.  In her new role working in partnership with clinical and administrative leaders at UK HealthCare, she will use her expertise to provide a unified approach to UK HealthCare’s external clinical strategies. She will also lead and oversee efforts to increase current market penetration and strengthen UK HealthCare affiliations in line with enterprise growth targets and work with physicians and surgeons to build referral relationships and find creative ways to develop new business.
