LEXINGTON, Ky., January, 2025 (gatton.uky.edu) Gatton College's Leadership Week, held from January 27–31, 2025, aimed to inspire and equip students with leadership skills through various events and activities. The week-long event featured events to promote personal and professional growth, increase student involvement in campus organizations and empower the next generation of leaders. The week, themed "Level Up: Lead with Confidence," was led by Shontá Phelps, Director of Student Leadership Development, with support from the Graham Office of Career Management.
The week included events such as the Wildcat Wardrobe Pop-up, a Student Government Association initiative that provides students with free professional attire and styling tips to help them feel confident in career-related settings. Students were able to select business suits or business casual outfits, giving them the opportunity to present themselves professionally in interviews, networking events and the workplace. Over 30 students received a new 2-piece suit or business casual outfit that will help them confidently navigate their career journey.
A Student Organization Tabling Fair showcased leadership and engagement opportunities within Gatton’s student organizations. The event allowed students to connect with most of the student organizations in the college, learning more about how they can get involved in leadership roles, contribute to their community and develop skills that will support both their academic and professional aspirations. The fair also offered a platform for clubs to highlight their impact and promote future initiatives.
Additionally, the Leadership Showcase provided a platform for student leaders to share their impactful leadership stories. Students and staff alike were inspired by the personal experiences, challenges and successes of their peers, offering a chance for reflection and engagement. The event included a robust Q&A session, with attendees asking thoughtful questions and sharing experiences. The conversations continued post-event, further fostering a community of support and engagement. Over 50 students participated, and the event generated significant conversation and interaction, leaving participants inspired to take on new leadership roles within the college.
The week concluded with the Level Up Leadership Summit, a one-day mini-conference designed to offer students tangible skills and knowledge to elevate their leadership journeys. The summit featured interactive breakout sessions covering important topics like career exploration, networking strategies, personal branding and salary negotiation. In addition, students had the opportunity to network with peers and professionals during a catered networking lunch, while also exploring resources at a resource fair. Students from six colleges across campus were in attendance.
The Leadership Week saw strong participation from students across multiple disciplines. Upperclassmen showed a particularly strong interest, and students gained new skills, connections and resources to support their leadership and professional growth.
Overall, Gatton College’s Leadership Week successfully demonstrated the impact of student leadership, engagement and professional development. Thanks to the support from partners including Whitaker Bank, Nationwide Financial, CHI Saint Joseph Health, Cintas and the Lewis Honors College.
