Apple Device/MacBook ❌

Several required software tools for Gatton courses are incompatible with MacOS. Below are the most common software compatibility issues:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a webcam or microphone?

Yes. A built-in or external webcam and microphone are required for virtual classes, online meetings, presentations, and proctored exams.

Will I need a printer?

Not necessarily. Most assignments are submitted digitally, and printing is available on campus. However, having a printer at home is a personal preference.

What happens if my laptop breaks during the semester?

We recommend backing up your files regularly. Limited loaner laptops are available for temporary use. Contact Gatton IT Support as soon as possible if your device stops working.

Is Linux supported?

No, Linux is not officially supported by Gatton IT. If you choose to use Linux, you're responsible for ensuring compatibility with required software like Microsoft Office, Respondus, and exam platforms.

Will I need to bring my laptop to every class?

Yes, in most cases. Many courses use in-class assignments or digital tools, so you’re expected to bring a fully charged laptop regularly. Instructors will let you know when it’s not required.

Can I use a tablet for note-taking?

Yes, but only as a secondary device. Tablets are fine for notes and reading, but they aren’t a replacement for a laptop in courses that require software installation or secure exam platforms.

How do I connect to the campus Wi-Fi?

Connect to the “eduroam” network using your LinkBlue credentials. Setup instructions are available on the UK IT website.

Where can I download software provided by the university?

Go to https://download.uky.edu and sign in with your LinkBlue credentials. You’ll find access to Microsoft Office, MATLAB, SPSS, Respondus, and many other licensed tools.

What if I don’t have a Windows computer?

While you'll still need your own laptop for daily use, VirtualDen offers a helpful workaround for accessing Windows-only software. It's a remote Windows environment supported by UK ITS and accessible through the Citrix Workspace App, which works on Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
