Curriculum

Prerequisite Courses

ACC 201 and 407 must be completed before applying to this program, as they provide the required foundation for admission and ensure you have the necessary background knowledge to succeed.

ACC 201 Financial Accounting

Topics include analyzing and recording transactions and adjustments; preparing and interpreting financial statements; and understanding the effects of transactions, adjustments, and accounting methods on the elements of financial statements and disclosures.

ACC 407 Concepts of Income Taxation

A study of the federal income tax structure with emphasis upon the conceptual foundations of taxation relating to the three types of taxpayers. businesses, individuals, and estates and trusts.

Required Courses: (9 credits)

ACC 507 Advanced Topics in Taxation

A study of advanced topics in taxation, including corporate taxation, accounting for income taxes, and international tax.

ACC 637 Taxation of Flow-Through Entities

A detailed study of the income taxation of flow-through entities, including Partnerships, S corporations, and limited liability companies.

ACC 617 Selected Topics in Taxation

A study of selected topics in taxation, including, estates and trusts, gift tax, multijurisdictional taxes, tax research, tax practice and procedure, and other tax topics.

Application Process

All majors are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated for admission based upon their undergraduate and/or accounting coursework grade point averages (GPA), essay responses, reference evaluations, and their TOEFL score (if applicable).

Domestic Students

  • Fall semester: July 26th
  • Spring semester: December 12th

International Students

  • Fall semester: April 15th
  • Spring semester: September 15th

Follow these steps to apply.

Application

Complete an online application and submit the application fee. An application is considered complete/ready for review once all supporting documents have been received by the University of Kentucky Graduate School.

This program starts in late August for Fall semester and early January for Spring semester. Applicants must complete the program specific application requirements to be considered for admission into the degree program. Incomplete files will not be reviewed.

Once the application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee within 3-4 weeks of admission.

Application Checklist

  • Undergraduate accounting GPA of 2.75 (out of 4.0) or greater

  • Transcript(s)

    • Upload digital copies of your unofficial test scores and transcripts from all universities attended using the online application.

    • Once admitted, official transcripts are required.

  • Three reference forms from former professors for non-UK students

  • Personal Statement - In 800 to 900 words, discuss the reasons you wish to pursue a taxation certificate at the University of Kentucky's Von Allmen School of Accountancy. Please address the following in your essay:

    • Academic preparation and accomplishments for graduate study

    • Leadership qualities and motivation

    • Your short-term and long-term goals and how a certificate will help achieve these goals.

    • Any additional information you feel is relevant

At least one official English proficiency exam score*:

  • TOEFL IBT: 90 or above

  • IELTS: 7 or above

  • Duolingo English Test: 120 or above

  • Verbal Section of GMAT exam: 30 or above

*This requirement is waived for students with U.S. degrees.
