The University of Kentucky's Graduate Certificate in Accounting Analytics is a 9-credit hour program designed to provide accounting students and professionals with a strong foundation in the theory and application of analytics. This provides the strategic development of necessary knowledge and skills to facilitate personal and professional growth.

Students completing this certificate will gain the conceptual knowledge needed to navigate the intricacies of data acquisition, storage, and control. Additionally, you will master the use of analytical tools and models, enabling you to effectively investigate complex accounting issues with the help of cutting-edge software. The certificate includes three core areas: data visualization, data management, and analytical modeling.

Curriculum

The Graduate Certificate in Accounting Analytics program is comprised of 3 course classes: 

  1. Data Visualization

  2. Data Management

  3. Analytical Modeling.

Pre-requisites include: 

Six hours of accounting, introductory statistics, introductory analytics OR the consent of the program director.

ACC 624 Accounting Analytics and Data Visualization

This course provides an introduction to, and hands-on experience with, accounting data management, accounting analytics, and visualizing accounting data. By learning both practical software tools and the core principles of data management and data visualization, you'll be prepared to leverage accounting data to provide insights into important accounting, auditing, and taxation problems.

ACC 634 Accounting and Auditing Data Management

This course introduces data management and mining concepts and practices. relational databases, structured query language (SQL), and data analytics tools incorporated to introduce data structure, database design, data queries and data manipulation.

ACC 659 Analytical Modeling in Acctg Audit Tax

This course is an introduction to the use of analytical modeling for supporting decision making in accounting, taxation, and auditing. It explores the use of analytical models and technologies including data mining and descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive modeling. Projects and cases will use software to explore accounting applications of confidence intervals and effect sizes, linear and logistic regression, association models and cluster analysis, text mining, time series analysis and forecasting, classification and regression trees, and, model selection and evaluation.

Application Process

All majors are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated for admission based upon their undergraduate and/or accounting coursework grade point averages (GPA), essay responses, reference evaluations, and their TOEFL score (if applicable).

Domestic Students

  • Fall semester: July 26th
  • Spring semester: December 12th

International Students

  • Fall semester: April 15th
  • Spring semester: September 15th

Follow these steps to apply.

Application

Complete an online application and submit the application fee. An application is considered complete/ready for review once all supporting documents have been received by the University of Kentucky Graduate School.

This program starts in late August for Fall semester and early January for Spring semester. Applicants must complete the program specific application requirements to be considered for admission into the degree program. Incomplete files will not be reviewed.

Once the application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee within 3-4 weeks of admission.

Application Checklist

  • Undergraduate accounting GPA of 2.75 (out of 4.0) or greater

  • Transcript(s)

    • Upload digital copies of your unofficial test scores and transcripts from all universities attended using the online application.

    • Once admitted, official transcripts are required.

  • Three reference forms from former professors for non-UK students

  • Personal Statement - Discuss the reasons you wish to pursue a taxation certificate at the University of Kentucky's Von Allmen School of Accountancy. Please address the following in your essay:

    • Academic preparation and accomplishments for graduate study

    • Leadership qualities and motivation

    • Your short-term and long-term goals and how a certificate will help achieve these goals.

    • Any additional information you feel is relevant

At least one official English proficiency exam score*:

  • TOEFL IBT: 90 or above

  • IELTS: 7 or above

  • Duolingo English Test: 120 or above

  • Verbal Section of GMAT exam: 30 or above

*This requirement is waived for students with U.S. degrees.
