University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Names Dr. Phil Chang as VP and Chief Medical Officer

Phillip K. Chang, MDUniversity Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has announced the appointment of University of Kentucky MBA alum, Phillip K. Chang, MD, as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the medical center. Dr. Chang is a recent graduate of the Professional MBA For Leaders in Healthcare program at the Gatton College of Business and Economics.

“Dr. Chang, who began his appointment as UH activated COVID-19 preparations in late winter, has been instrumental in maintaining our surge readiness through careful planning and collaboration with teams throughout the system,” said Daniel I. Simon, MD, Chief Clinical and Scientific Officer, and President, UH Cleveland Medical Center.

As UH transitions into a re-opening phase, Dr. Chang will lead major initiatives including high-reliability medicine, quality and safety, patient advocacy, physician relations, and utilization and case management for the flagship academic medical center.

Dr. Chang came to UH from University of Kentucky HealthCare where he served as System Chief Medical Officer and faculty member in the Department of Surgery. Other positions he held during his 13 years there include Section Chief of Acute Care Surgery, Medical Director of Perioperative Services and Medical Director of Physician IT Strategy.

He earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, and an MBA from University of Kentucky Gatton College of Economics and Business. His professional and community service includes serving as board member and chairman of the Physician Leadership Forum of the Kentucky Hospital Association. In 2019, Dr. Chang was named by Becker’s Healthcare as "One of 100 CMOs to Know."
