A Dual Degree of the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine and Gatton College of Business and Economics

Health care and business are increasingly interconnected. While hospital administrators need a solid medical and business background, physicians also are increasingly confronted with complex business decisions. In response to this need, the University of Kentucky's Gatton College of Business and Economics and the College of Medicine offers the MD/MBA dual degree program awarding both Medical Doctorate (MD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees in five years. Admissions & Preparatory Courses

The MD/MBA dual degree program awards both the Medical Doctorate (MD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees at the University of Kentucky. Students interested in the MD/MBA program must apply independently to both colleges and meet the admission requirements of each program. Program Description & Curriculum

Giving physicians the skills to successfully integrate medicine and business

Business decisions have a broad impact on the delivery of health care and physicians equipped with the proper managerial and financial skills will be in a better position to effectively function in this evolving environment. Whether managing an individual or group practice, leading a hospital department, or contributing to the development of health care policy, the understanding of fundamental business principles is essential. The MD/MBA dual degree is coupled with courses from both the One Year MBA and Professional MBA programs at the Gatton College of Business and Economics, totaling 36-credit hours.

Program Overview

MD/MBA Dual Degree Program

Year 1: Medical school courses as scheduled.
Year 2: Medical school courses as scheduled.
Year 3: Medical school courses as scheduled. Submit graduate school application to the MBA program and satisfy the MBA Admissions Requirements by the communicated deadlines.
Year 4: 30 credit hours of MBA courses + 6 credit hours of transfer credits of MD courses = 36 credit hours
Year 5: Medical school courses as scheduled.

Please note:

  • Candidates can use their MCAT scores in lieu of the GMAT/GRE graduate test requirement to apply into the UK MBA program, however the GMAT or GRE exam is required for possible scholarship consideration (as funds remain available).
  • For the MD/MBA dual degree program, the MBA Admissions Committee reserves a certain number of seats each year into the UK MBA program. Admissions decisions are considered on a rolling admissions, so it's strongly recommended to apply early.
  • There are several options of starting the MD/MBA dual degree program. Please refer to the College of Medicine about the appropriate time. MD students must be in good standing with the College of Medicine in order to be recommended for considered into the MD/MBA dual degree program.
