Can you think of a better place to go for advice than from a recent Gatton graduate? These young professionals walked the same halls, sat in the same classrooms, and studied for the same exams. They are eager to provide their stories of successes and challenges and to share their personal insights regarding graduate school admissions and that very important first job search.

Mary Beth Hicks
Mary Beth is from Bardstown Kentucky and graduated in May 2006 with an economics major with a minor in international business. She is now a second year law student at the UK College of Law. This past summer she worked as clerk here, in Lexington, at a firm called Landrum & Shouse doing civil litigation work.
David M. Blanchett, MSFS, CFP, CLU, AIFA, QPA, CFA
Internal Institutional Consultant
David M. Blanchett graduated from UK in 2004 with majors in finance and economics. Mr. Blanchett received a BS in Economics and a BBA in Finance from the University of Kentucky in 2003 and a Master of Science in Financial Services (MSFS) from the American College in 2004. At Unified Trust Company he is primarily responsible for working with external advisors with fiduciary, compliance, operational, and investment issues relating to Unified Trust's retirement plan services.
Mr. Blanchett has been awarded the following designations: Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS), Chartered Wealth Advisor (CWA), Qualified Pension Administrator (QPA), and Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst (AIFA). He was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter in 2007. He currently holds his Kentucky Life & Health Insurance licenses and has passed the NASD Series 6, 7, and 65 exams.
Mr. Blanchett has written multiple papers that have been published in the Journal of Pension Benefits, the Journal of Indexes, and the Journal of Financial Planning. He won the Journal of Financial Planning's 2007 Call for Papers (known as the Financial Frontiers Awards) with a research paper titled "Determining the Optimal Distribution Glide Path." He is President of the Lexington Employee Benefits Society and is active in the Cincinnati CFA Society and the FPA of Cincinnati. Mr. Blanchett joined Unified Trust Company in 2005 and has over seven years of investment experience.
Chris Hafling
As a native of Louisville, KY, Mr. Hafling graduated from UK in 2001 with majors in marketing and economics. His current position is as Athletic Marketing and Promotions Coordinator at Eastern Kentucky University. This entails handling all of the day-to-day marketing and promotion activities for all 17 Division-I sports at the university.
Mike Spencer
Originally from Louisville, KY, Mr. Spencer graduated from UK in 2002 with majors in finance and marketing. He has worked the past five years with Procter and Gamble as a Rinse and Dental Adhesive Financial Analyst for Crest Pro-Health Rinse & Scope Mouth Wash, and Fixodent. As a Financial Analyst he is responsible for the entire profit & loss statement for two businesses and ensuring that these businesses deliver their sales and profit commitments to the company. This requires him to work across many different functions from Marketing (Promotion plans that are in place to drive sales) to R&D (Ensuring that the businesses have a sufficient pipeline of new products and technology) to Product Supply (ensuring that the businesses have the right cost structure in place and that they can produce quality products).
Ben Hannah
Ben Hannah is a recent 2007 graduate of UK, with a major in marketing. He is originally from Findlay, Ohio, but now works in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area with Marathon Petroleum. His job entails managing all asphalt and heavy oil accounts throughout the Cincinnati/Northern KY/Southern IN area. He evaluates and recommends market strategies relating to his customer base, and tries to optimize the financial results throughout his system versus market alternatives. Aside from customer relations, his main focuses are state lettings and contract negotiations.
Jon Rauch, CPA
PricewaterhouseCoopers Assurance Associate
Mr. Rauch received his BS in Accounting from the University of Kentucky in 2004 and his MS in Accounting in 2005. As an assurance associate, he is responsible for working on the integrated audit of financial statements for SEC companies. He has worked for such companies as Toyota, The Kroger Co., Lexmark, and National Cash Register.
Mr. Rauch started at PwC in August 2005 in the Cincinnati, Ohio, office and transferred to the Lexington, Kentucky, office in January 2007. Mr. Rauch has travelled extensively for his job, including to Dundee, Scotland; Los Angeles, California; and Atlanta, Georgia. He recently returned from a trip to Cebu City in the Philippines for Lexmark. Mr. Rauch plays an active role in campus recruiting for PwC and is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the Kentucky Society of CPA's.
Sarah Beth Carpenter
Originally from Maysville, Kentucky, Ms. Carpenter graduated with a Bachelors in Accounting in 2006 and a Bachelors of Business Administration in 2007. In the spring of 2007, Ms. Carpenter studied abroad in Queensland, Australia, learning international business concepts. Ms. Carpenter is currently employed by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP in Louisville as an associate in Assurance Services. Her hobbies include: shopping, traveling, and being the Wildcats' biggest fan!
