What criteria is used for acceptance into the MBA?
Our goal is to admit academically strong applicants who show the greatest potential for successfully completing the program and succeeding in a leadership position. We look for applicants whose backgrounds will contribute to the academic excellence and the demographic, educational and experiential diversity of each class. Because our goal is to prepare business leaders of the future, our review includes all aspects of an applicant's background. Your academic qualifications, which include undergraduate major, institutions, GPA, and GMAT or GRE scores, are all a part of the admissions process. Another part of our evaluation involves a review of your personal statement, work experience, letter of recommendation, writing skills as well as extracurricular, community and professional activities. From this review, we try to determine your leadership experience and potential along with overall motivation to succeed in a graduate program.
What are the admissions requirements for the MBA?
Do you require MBA preparatory ("prerequisite") courses?
Yes, both the One Year MBA and Professional MBA programs require the following MBA preparatory (or prerequisite) courses: Macro Economics, Micro Economics, Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting. For all majors (except for Engineering, Finance and Mathematics) we also strongly recommend the following additional courses: Business Math & Statistics and Excel for MBA. Candidates can apply into the program without the required MBA prepararotry courses, however they must be completed before the final application deadline which is May 11th (One Year MBA) and July 1st (Professional MBA). Additional time can be granted on a case by case basis. To learn about the options of satisfying these courses, please visit the MBA Preparatory Courses page.
When should I apply to the MBA program?
Applications are evaluated on a rolling admissions cycle until the application deadlines. Thus, the MBA Admissions Committee can and will consider new applications throughout the year. As a result, we encourage candidates to apply as early as possible, especially if they wish to be considered for possible scholarship award (only available in the One Year MBA). Some of our dual degree programs can carry different admissions/scholarship deadlines.
Should I take the GMAT or the GRE?
We accept either the GMAT or GRE as part of the graduate entrance exam requirement. We recommend visiting the GMAT and GRE sites for more information. Please make sure to review our GMAT/GRE Waiver Policy to see if you can qualify for a possible waiver.
What is an acceptable GMAT/GRE score and GPA?
We do not have a minimum GMAT or GRE score requirement. The average GMAT or GRE score (and GPA) of applicants admitted to the program varies from year to year, depending on the pool of applications received. While we consider many elements of an applicant's background when making admission decisions, it is important that applicants have a competitive GMAT or GRE score (and GPA). We realize there are certain limitations with standardized tests; however, the GMAT & GRE scores (and GPA) give us a very important comparison among applicants from different schools and majors. Therefore, we encourage you to prepare for the GMAT or GRE exam and consider retaking if you do not score competitively. The University of Kentucky's Graduate School requires a minimum 2.75 GPA for entry into any Master’s program. If the Gatton College wants to admit an applicant to the MBA program with a GPA below 2.75, then a waiver must be recommend and then approved by the Graduate School here at the University of Kentucky. Please visit the class profile pages for the One Year MBA and Professional MBA programs which reflect class averages for both GMAT/GRE scores and GPA's entering the MBA program.
How should I best prepare to take the GRE or GMAT exams?
We encourage applicants to prepare well in order to score competitively on the GMAT or on the GRE. If you feel that your GMAT or GRE score does not reflect your true abilities, we strongly encourage you to retake the test to improve your score. We will use the highest score earned on the GMAT or GRE. There are some online resources available for both the GMAT and GRE on their designated websites: Prepare for the GMAT or Prepare for the GRE.
Do you have a GMAT/GRE waiver policy?
Yes, please refer to the updated GMAT/GRE Waiver Policy. Each candidiate is evaluated individually by the MBA Admissions Committee.
Do you offer scholarships for the MBA program?
Yes, however scholarships are only offered in the One Year MBA program. Scholarships are limited and competitive, and are determined by the UK MBA Admissions Committee based on the overall competitiveness of a candidate’s application. All applications received by the designated scholarship deadlines are automatically considered for the general scholarship award. Candidates who apply after the scholarship deadline will be considered (as funds are available). All scholarships will be based on information collected through the admissions application, so there is no separate scholarship application required.
