Minimum Wage Fight Heads to City Council

ACORN Suspends Latest Petition Drive

New Mexicans for a Fair Wage suspended the latest petition drive to place the minimum wage on a special election ballot.  The coalition decided to see if the Albuquerque City Council, with Council President Martin Heinrich's leadership, can pass a good minimum wage bill in the coming two months.

ACORN member, Mike Taylor, who makes less than $7.50, said, “A lot of volunteers worked hard, gathering signatures for the current petition drive, but what’s important is winning a fair wage for hard-working people.  If we have a better chance of winning by waiting for the City Council to act or doing a new petition drive this summer, that’s what we’ll do.”

Indeed, the coalition agreed that if the City Council fails to pass an acceptable measure, it would place a new proposal on the November ballot with a petition drive this summer.

Thanks to everyone who has collected signatures.  Your work has not been in vain!  It has succeeded in getting the City Council to move with greater determination this year than they showed last year.  Please turn any remaining signatures that you have in to ACORN so that we can keep track of supporters in case we launch a new petition drive this summer
