Department of Finance & Quantitative Methods

The Department of Finance & Quantitative Methods offers upper-level and graduate courses on a variety of financial topics. The foundation sequence in corporate finance and investments requires an understanding of many other subjects, and students may enroll in finance classes only after successfully completing specific courses in accounting, economics, mathematics, and quantitative methods. For those who have decided to concentrate in Finance & Quantitative Methods, the remainder of the program can be tailored to meet individual interests.

Courses in finance provide students the opportunity to learn the techniques and theories that lend structure to the financial decisions made by firms and individuals. Foundation topics include traditional corporate finance, valuation of financial and real assets, and investment decisions. Advanced coursework may include portfolio management, valuation of derivative securities, international financial management, domestic and global capital markets, financial institutions, and real estate analysis.

Graduating finance majors typically seek employment in the financial, banking, or corporate sectors. Entry-level positions include budget, credit, financial, risk, or securities analyst; financial services representative, planner, or counselor; loan officer or underwriter; insurance or real estate agent; and business and real estate appraiser. Many mid-career graduates will place at local and national corporations. In the long term, individuals with backgrounds in finance can manage their respective careers to include executive positions and business ownership.

In addition to offering and supporting the courses, the Department of Finance & Quantitative Methods also sponsors a chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA). This student FMA chapter creates opportunities for UK students to develop relationships with financial managers at local and national firms. The chapter coordinates site visits, workshops, and guest speakers to help connect the academic program with the practice of finance in the business world.

In 2012, the Department of Finance and Quantitative Methods was accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA exams.
