Microsoft Office Specialist exams in Word, Powerpoint, and Excel are now required to be completed by students for upper division admission into the Gatton College of Business and Economics.  Students satisfy this requirement by passing an exam in each of the areas.  Below are the answers to commonly asked questions about the exams.

Who?  All students who started UK in Fall 2006 or after are required to pass the exams for admission to upper division coursework.

What?  Microsoft offers these exams around the world to certify that an individual is knowledgeable about all aspects of these products.  The exams are timed and require that students complete the perform operations in the exact way requested by the exam.  More information about the exams can be found on the Microsoft website.  We accept certifications in either Office 2003 or Office 2007.

Why? Proficiency in these products is necessary to be successful in a number of business classes. For example, Excel spreadsheets are widely used in accounting, statistics, finance, and decision sciences to conduct statistical and financial analyses. All aspects of business use all three of these products.  We encourage students to report these certifications on their resume as these exams are valued by employers that hire our students.

When?  Students must complete the exams in order to take business classes at the junior and senior level. The exams generally need to be completed by the middle of your sophomore year.

Where?  The Gatton College offers the exams on a regular basis as a service to students. These exams cost $70 and include a free retake.  Financial aid students needing assistance to cover fees associated with the Microsoft Certification Specialist Exams may contact their financial aid counselor. You may sign up to take the exam in the college online. You may also take the exam at any Certiport testing site. Certiport offers a number of testing sites around the world including several locations in Kentucky.  Some students have taken the exams in high school.

How?  Credit for the exams will show up on your transcript as a “P” for B&E 102, B&E 103 & B&E 104.  If you take the exams as UK, this will happen automatically within a week of completing the exam.  If you passed the exams at another testing site or at another school you will need to authorize us to view your transcript as instructed in the hyperlink.
