After you have completed the prerequisites and Ph.D. coursework and you have the written approval of the
area DGS and your Advisory Committee, you will be required to take the qualifying examinations.
The qualifying examination is one examination which includes written and oral components. The written portion
consists of an examination on the major area—a maximum 8-hour examination taken on two consecutive
days.
The major area faculty members on your Advisory Committee coordinate the preparation and evaluation of the
examination. The Advisory Committee chairperson will coordinate the overall scheduling, preparation and evaluation
of the student's written qualifying examination.
Then you will be orally examined by your Advisory Committee. The content of the oral exam will be restricted
to the subject matter in your major area. The written and oral portions of the qualifying examination are considered
to be elements of one examination. The written examination in the major field and the oral examination
are usually completed six weeks of the start of the fall or spring semester.
