The mimimum coursework required for the Ph.D. degree is 40 hours. Allowances for exceptions to the 40 hour
program can be made if you have taken courses above a master's degree level with the advice of your advisory
committee and the approval of the director of graduate studies (DGS) in your area.
Initially, you will be guided and advised by your area DGS. Subsequently, your Advisory Committee, most particularly
your Committee chairperson, assumes these responsibilities. You will be expected to play an active role
in soliciting faculty members for your Advisory Committee. Faculty members so approached elect to serve on
the Advisory Committee at their discretion. The DGS recommends the composition of the Advisory Committee
to the Dean of The Graduate School, usually at the end of your second semester of coursework (12-18 credit
hours). Any revisions of the Committee, likewise, must be filed in The Graduate School.
The Advisory Committee will consist of at least 5 members, of which at least 3 represent the major area. At
least 3 of the 5 members (including the chairperson or co-chairperson) must be full members of the Graduate
Faculty. A core of 5 members must be kept at its full complement throughout the student's graduate career.
The Advisory Committee will meet to approve your program of study. Your program of study form must be
approved and signed by the area DGS.
The chairperson of the Advisory Committee (Major Professor) and your area DGS will share responsibility for
helping you determine the dissertation director in the event that a change in the chairperson is desirable. The
Advisory Committee membership may remain the same during both the coursework and dissertation stages, or
the Committee may be reformulated during the dissertation phase to better serve your research interests.
