A doctoral student's advisory committee initially consists of senior faculty members representing disciplines within their area of study. The committee advises the student, approves the student's plan of study, prepares the qualifying examination, administers it, and determines whether the student passes on to dissertation work. To ensure consistent treatment of all students, this committee usually includes most of the department's tenured faculty. Thus, until the student passes the qualifying exam, generally the same advisors will serve on each student's advisory committee.
After the student passes the qualifying exam, the advisory committee is typically reformulated to closely reflect the student's specific dissertation interests. At this dissertation stage, it is the student's responsibility to identify appropriate faculty members who are both willing and able to serve on the committee. The committee will assess the student's dissertation proposal, oversee the research efforts, and determine whether the dissertation defense is satisfactory. The university requires that at least four members serve on the committee. At least three must be your area of study, three must have graduate-faculty standing, and at least one must be from outside the Business Administration faculty.
