There are two main degree requirements that an Accounting doctoral student must satisfy.
-
The student must successfully complete an approved plan of study consisting of required and elective courses. This typically takes two years. The coursework culminates in the qualifying examination. a comprehensive written and oral exam in which the student must demonstrate a clear mastery of accounting subject matter and a readiness to pursue dissertation research.
-
The student must produce and successfully defend a dissertation. This dissertation effort begins by
- identifying a research topic,
- proposing a plan for investigating the topic,
- obtaining approval of the proposal from the student's faculty advisory committee,
- defending the proposal before the faculty and Ph. D. students.
Research is then carried out according to the approved plan, with ongoing guidance from the advisory committee. The entire research effort is documented in the dissertation, which must be presented and successfully defended before the faculty.
